Shorts and documentaries from all over the world competing for awards: the River Film Festival is back and with many innovations: a new Internet site and two new sections in the competition: Local cinema and Extreme shorts. These latter, sent in from all over the world, will also be projected in continuous loop on led screens on Aps (local transport) buses, trams and in bus shelters.

The seventh edition of the River Film Festival will be held on the banks of the River Piovego, at Porta Portello, Padua, from 28th May to 9th June 2013 and is a key event in Padua’s Estate Carrarese: as always, the focus of attention will be the big screen on its moored raft, where the films selected by the jury will be shown every evening. The Associazione Culturale Researching Movie which organises the event has both financial support and the patronage of the Comune di Padova (City Council) Assessorato alla Cultura, and this year too they will offer the public a varied selection of quality shorts, documentaries and animations sent in from all over the world. The Festival also has a new, completely re-designed site, with new functions.
TWO NEW SECTIONS IN COMPETITION
There are also two new categories in the Awards: Best Extreme Short Film “Supercorto”, shorts that last from one and a half to five minutes, shorts shot with anything, from a camera to a mobile phone, and Local short “Corto locale”, reserved for works shot and produced by filmmakers working in the Veneto Region. Extreme short and Local short have now joined the original four sections, International short, Documentary, Animation and Graduation short in the competition.
CINEMA ON THE TRAM
The ease of shooting and showing Extreme short films means everyone in the city can get involved in the event: throughout the Festival, the general public will be able to watch the Extreme shorts competing for the “Best” award. The films will be projected, in continuous loop, onto led screens on Aps (local transport) trams and buses and in bus shelters and the public will be asked to vote and take part in choosing the five Best extreme shorts.
PORTELLO - LINKS AROUND THE WORLD
There is also a new non-competitive section, the Festival of Festivals, where the shorts that have won in each of the seven international festivals that River Film Festival is twinned with will be shown. The seven partners are: the Berlin International Film Festival (Germany), The Belgrade Festival of documentaries and shorts (Serbia), Oporto International Short Film Festival (Portugal), Teheran International Short Film Festival (Iran), Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentary & Shorts Films (Egypt), Kazan International Muslim Film Festival (Tatarstan, Russian Federation) and Seoul International Extreme-short Image & Film Festival (South Korea).

OPENING EVENT AND FINAL, CLOSING, AWARD PRESENTATION EVENT
Special opening event: 28th May, in the evening, THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING (Egypt, 2006), a film by Marwan Hamed will be shown. Based on a novel The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswany, the film recounts transformations underway in Egyptian society today as seen through the eyes and lives of people living in the Yacoubian Building, a historic Cairo landmark that, over the years, has been transformed and now houses a variegated cross-section of humanity. During the Festival all the films selected by the jury will be projected onto our large screen floating on the waters of the River Piovego, in the midst of the enchanting, ancient river port of Padua, Porta Portello. On the 9th June, the last evening of the Film Festival, winners of the Best Short, Best Extreme short, Best Local short, Best Documentary, Best Animation and Best Graduation short, will be announced and the awards presented.
